Dick DeVos Charitable Works

Dick DeVos is the son of Richard Devos Senior, whose family is renowned for its charitable works in many spheres of life. Apart from other leading philanthropic families like the Coorses, the Bradleys and the Kochs, the Devos family is known as a huge contributor to many institutions including the Christian right and the conservative movement. Most of their charitable deeds are channeled through their family foundations including Amway, which was co-founded by Richard DeVos Sr. Amway is well known for giving out generous donations to worth millions of dollars to causes such as anti-tax and anti-union efforts among many others. Donations have been made to many advocacies and think tank groups by the Amway family which also includes Erick Prince, who is Dick Devos brother in law. He is a brother to Betsy DeVos, Dick DeVos’ wife and co-founder of Blackwater, a private security company.

Richard Marvin DeVos junior commonly known as Dick DeVos was born on October 21, 1955. He is an entrepreneur, businessman and politician who was once ranked as the 67th richest man in the United States of America. He is a holder of Business Administration degree from Northwood University with honorary doctorates from various educational institutions. He is married to Betsy Devos, who is the former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. He first became the vice- president of Amway in 1984 after joining it a decade earlier. During his tenure as vice-president his performance was outstanding leading to a tremendous growth of the company. He then became president of the Orlando Magic basketball team which was acquired by the Devos family. He later relinquished the post and re-joined Amway again in 1993 as president. It was during this time that he created Alticor which then became the parent company of other several subsidiaries.

On philanthropy, Dick DeVos is the president of the Dick and Betsy Foundation which gives generous donations to many civic, religious, artistic, community, educational and free-market economy organizations since 1990. Among his many worthwhile contributions and donations include the establishment of the Michigan Aviation Academy which is a community-based institution. The foundation has also supported ArtPrize, which is an artistic competition in grand rapids since its inception in 2009. The Dick and Betsy Devos scholarships was established to support student entry in MA, MS and MBA at the Thunderbird School of Management to students especially those from developing countries. Other donations are in the areas of civil leadership and pollution studies.
