Tempus Co Founder Eric Lefkofsky
Over the last two decades, Americans have spent an extra $933 billion on health care. These expenditures have been paid due to higher fees for care along with the care for patients being more expensive and intense. Along with care being more expensive, both population growth and aging were also among the biggest factors of healthcare spending. With a change in prevalence of disease, healthcare spending can eventually decrease along with a decrease in the usage of healthcare services. However, it is rare that healthcare service usage declines and therefore, spending will likely stay the same or increase during the next several years.
When evaluating the spending on healthcare, one of the things that need to be taken into account is the spending by disease. With certain diseases, the spending will likely increase while spending declines with other ones. As a result, the actual type of disease is a critical factor in determining whether or not healthcare spending increases or decreases. As an example, diabetes was a disease that has seen the highest increase in healthcare spending as a total of $64 billion was spent on treating this condition. What contributed to the increase in spending for diabetes was a combination of research, prevalence of diabetes, population growth, aging and also the use of pharmaceuticals. With these factors in mind, many organizations have looked to decrease spending on healthcare by encouraging people to engage in preventative care on a regular basis. However, the effort in reducing healthcare spending has seen very minimal success in recent years.
