YouTube Is The Choice Of Modern Day Counterculture Warriors
Perhaps nothing is more important to any counterculture group today than YouTube.
In the 1960s, counterculture hippies and protesters marched in the streets or staged sit-ins at local universities or city hall. Minority political opinions were handed out as paper fliers on the streets one at a time by volunteers.
But today it’s all about that YouTube channel, and the Holy Grail of any counterculture group is to build a massive audience and score videos that go viral.
If you’re a normal adult (as in not belonging to any counterculture group) YouTube is basically a place to catch up with kimmel, Colbert or Fallon — or watch cooking tips and how-to videos.
But counterculture groups are working YouTube hard to connect with other like-minded people worldwide. Unfortunately, YouTube is also home to some of the worst and most frightening counterculture movements of today – such as Neo-Nazi and far-right extremist groups.
In fact, a recent article in The New York Times Magazine written by John Herrman said that YouTube is dominated by just one native political community: Right Wing Extremists. He goes on to say that YouTube has become “the new talk radio” – the medium that gave rise to the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin.
But some on the political left are determined to fight back. One is a 29-year-old trans woman from Baltimore who YouTubes under the name of “Contra.” She uses her highly creative and always provocative channel to counter right-wing extremist material – and her philosophy is to “meet them on their own ground and defeat with better content.”
Whether Contra is winning the culture war on YouTube or not, she is certainly laughing all the way to the bank. By some estimates, her videos earn an amazing $5,300 each!
Still, there are those observers that would disagree that YouTube is dominated by right wingers. If anything, they say, YouTube can only be said to be dominated by cat lovers!
