Philanthropist and Investor: James Dondero
James Dondero is a Texas businessman and investor. His career started all the way back in 1984 with the Morgan Guaranty training program and he later moved into the GIC subsidiary of Protective life. In 1993 he became co-founder and President of Highland Capital Management which has since become a leading face in many investing fields, including Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) which they helped to develop. In October of 2014, it was announced that Dondero and HCM would donate $1 million in order to help The Family Place complete their $16.5 million capital campaign to construct a new headquarters. This headquarters is to be used to help over 2,000 victims of family violence a month through counseling and skill building services. In an interview with Emily Roberts at The Family Place’s website, James Dondero is quoted as saying, “The civic community in Dallas gets things done; and we at Highland Capital Management were impressed by the way The Family Place, through avid philanthropic support, took this concept from inception to the final stage of this campaign in just a year. We are proud to invest alongside many of the most generous and thoughtful in the community.” In April of 2017, the completion of a $14 million Hippo enclosure was announced, citing Dondero and HCM as one of a handful of investors who helped build it. The $1 million donation by them was put towards the 4,485-square-foot Highland Hippo Hut, used for special educational displays and private events. In mid-2017 it was announced that Highland Capital Management would set its sights on real estate and development with Dondero at the helm.
